Just got myself a lovely 4ft tank for my little monster and plan to start setting it up tomorrow and get the cycling underway straight away. I'm planning on getting a couple of fish once it's set up to put in there to help with the cycling, they will be moved out when it is fully cycled and they have been fully quarantined as Scylla won't be moved into her new pad until at least the end of March, I just wanted to get the tank established ASAP  I'm just curious though if there are any fish that will be best for the cycling process or will any do? I plan on moving them into Scylla's old tank and put my existing goldfish in there too once I know they have no nasties and it is time for everyone to move home.

you already have the tank set up and running right? One way to cycle the new tank is to put the filter from the old tank and put it on the new tank, and you could probably just immediatly add scylla to the tank. I'd watch the parameters a bit, but you should be ok. I've cycled a few tanks just by getting some filter media from one tank, and sticking it in the cycling tank.

Nope not yet done it, bought the tank and a few decs today but putting the water in tomorrow. She's currently in a 2ft tank with a Fluval 1, don't think that would be powerful enough for the new one to help it cycle would it? Was thinking of moving her current water over though and topping the tank up with new stuff.

I should have clarified, I meant the old tank was already set up and running. beneficial bacteria isn't in the water, so water current isn't a huge deal for cycling. You can add the current tank water, but like I said, beneficial bacteria isn't in the water, it's on the surfaces of whatever is in your tank. As long as the fluval 1 is from a cycled tank it should be fine for seeding the tank. Adding some of the sand from the previous tank wouldn't hurt either, as well as any decorations, but using the old filter should seed your new tank.

+1 to what Carson said. You should be able to run the small filter in with the big one in the new tank to do an "instant cycle". Adding some substrate and decorations from your old tank would help too.

You can also ad some Biological Filtration booster, which contains live good bacteria:happy::wacko:;)

Actually, most of the 'bacteria boosters' you see on the market are junk. Live bacteria will not survive in a bottled environment. Even if they were live when they went in the bottle, they quickly become poisoned by their own waste and die. You're basically buying a bottle of dead bacteria, at best.

The only bacterial booster that was worth purchasing was BioSpora, which was refrigerated, but the company has changed its formula, or is no longer offering it.

I've actually been doing some research on this, as my tank is taking forever to cycle, and I'm tired of waterchanges. I've read that stability is supposed to work fairly well, even though it has a shelf life of 4 years. I'm still pretty skeptical about it, but I've read a few threads on other forums that document their cycling process of two tanks(one with stability, one without). Stability seems to work, so I just bought a bottle, and am trying it out now. It's the second day, and so far no results, but I'm hoping it works. I've never really trusted anything that claims to have beneficial bacteria in a bottle, and a product that has a shelf life of 4 years seems pretty outlandish to me, but I'm giving it a try.
