After much planning & over feeding :D of my smallest axie hoping he'll grow to the same size as the friend I bought him - who quickly outgrew my original axie.

I've had to put them into the same tank, I couldn't bring myself to "see how they go together" so I've made a partition for the tank... It seems to have worked really well & both the axies are in & getting used to their new spaces :)

Here's some pics of the new tank setup

The divider is a food safe storage box lid that I trimmed & drilled to allow flow & holes smaller than smallest axie head  I've placed it on a slight angle which requires less support as it is wedged in & creates 2 odd shaped areas :)

Left side - Splats tank

As always if you can see any issues with how I've set them up please don't hesitate to let me know - its been a learning curve educating myself on these guys & I don't want to get it wrong (again!) any input is always welcomed :)

Oh & the problems with Dobermann have been solved by moving the axies onto the kitchen counter ;) husband was hoping to get rid of the small tank on counter.... He didn't think I'd replace it with a bigger one! :D lol

The beauty of the angled divider (even if unintentional!) is that it gives both axies more floor space than one that divides the tank straight across the middle.

Looks great!

Very nice setting! I especially like the hollow tree log!

The axies like them too :D

The hides are just the plastic ones you get everywhere - they don't stand out so badly when surrounded by live plants.

I'd like to say it was intentional - but it definitely worked out way better than I could have imagined :)

I just popped in to say that your setup is absolutely gorgeous.

Thanks to the Dobermann I've had to do a major reshuffle of the interiors - I have to reverse scape in the sense that I need a lot of plants at the front of the tank so that movement of axolotls is not as noticeable o_O

So..... The new version ;)

Thanks to the obsessive Dobermann we've had to do this

Funniest thing is the axolotls swim up & look out above the barrier - I'm sure they love teasing the dog ;) lol

Update : divided tank was too cramped.
Compared the sizes & decided it would be ok - removed axies, removed divider, completely rearranged tank, made escape routes, lots of hides & multi level. Returned axies & after 3 days it's all still good :) 2 happy axies with lots of room to roam or swim or stalk each other :)

The axolotl size comparison :)
Splat (left side) Squishy (right side)
Hatched within 7days of each other,
Splat was always smaller thanks to my poor diet offerings when he was tiny - Squishy was fed pellets before I got him at 3mths old & once he discovered worms he doubled in size leaving Splat looking tiny! Splat had to regrow a leg due to an unexpected flying lesson o_O & he seemed to stop growing while the leg regrew. Now healed & 4 legged I've been feeding him up regularly hoping he'd catch up... It worked :D they're now so close in size they're now tankies :)

Sharing the love :)
All going really well - they bumped into each other & scooted away at first now they'll climb over each other :) & I've even caught them hanging out in the same hide side by side :)

So cute! Would like to get 2 myself, as juvies, so that divided tank set up would work nicely, thanks for the pics! :D

Ahhh, your axies are soooooo cuuute!!! Gorgeous set up! How big is the tank? Since the layer of sand is rather thin, do you still have to stir it to release the gas bubbles or not?

Thank you I think they're gorgeous too :)

This tank is an AquaOne AR620 so just over 2'ft across (620mm) the divider was a little too cramped in the end but did the job while they were slightly different sizes.

I had tried planting into the sand but now I'll stick to driftwood & rock mounted plants & ferns - so much easier to change the layout, way less messy, much hardier & that way i can move them to access every bit of sand with a gravel vac - because I vac the sand often I've not noticed any bubbles.

Is one of your axies blue? Or is that the light? If he is blue, what kind is he?

My wild type - the darker one - I would describe his colour as licorice, a kind of blueish hue to him.
The Freckled One - lighter grey
Sometimes almost looks lilac / purple. His eyes are not wild type & his origins completely unknown as he came home as an hitch hiking egg (long story) :)
I'm still wondering what he'll be myself.

Did you raise them both from eggs? They're in such good condition, shame the only axies i have access to are pet store ones :( Yours are just gorgeous! Highly photogenic too ;)

I raised the hitch hiker (Splat) & then bought Squishy the wild type for company :) I found Squishy on gumtree from a nice lady who'd raised 10 axies (her first time - she got the eggs from a friend) he was only $5 (but I gave her $10!)

They're both photo loving beasties :)

Hey everyone, just want a little advice. Its 55 - 60 celcius in my Salamanders tank. Hes curled up and tyring ti bury himself, Im assuming hes too cold. I was wondering if he would benefit from a heated rock cave (since he LOVES his cave) that I could set on low? I NEVER see him curled up and trying to bury himself unless his tank sits at 63 degrees celcius or lower. So I am assuming hes a little uncomfortable.

He also seems a little sluggish, again, assuming hes cold. Having heating trouble with the new house right now. What do we think? Was thinking of grabbing this for him since its got very low, medium, and higher medium heat settings that exude heat downward inside the rock cave but ALSO exudes it UPWARDS outside of the rock cave, effectively keeping the tank itself a little warm. Seems like it miiiight be a little small for him though, my guy is about 7 inches from tip of his nose tothe tip of his tail.
