New shanjing viv for Spring!

Decided to spring clean my adult shanjing viv. I put in 2 new plants, some eco earth and moss, and some rocks, bark and plant pot bits for hides. The white lump behind the water dish is snow, as I just pulled the moss out of the garden today. The shans seem happy with it!

Yes, it is. She had been hiding under the water dish before I moved her.

That's a nice setup! How old are they and what / how often do you feed them to get this big?

Not sure of age, as I got them as adults. I feed waxworms, butterworms, earthworms and the occasional slug 2 or 3 times per week, less in winter.

The female has always been big. I often wondered myself if she was gravid, but I haven't cooled them over the winter enough to breed. Maybe next year!

Maybe you should give the fella a helping hand....a bit of soft music, a nice meal, dim the lights ?!?

Do you have a talent for photography as your images are very clear?

Our brood of baby (6 month old now) Fire Salamanders are growing nicely. We ended up with 27 in total.....so like all good parents....I am dashing around making sure they are well fed!

Very nice viv!
I see a great difference in the way this specie is kept! Some have them totally aquaristic other like your setup with only a little pond! Why is this? Is both ways equally good? Or do you change setup?

I have the soil in my viv sloping up towards the back, with moss on top. I water the very front left hand corner and leave the rest, occasionally misting the moss. The newts spend most of their time hiding together under the bark, which is one of the driest areas. They do come out at night to wander around and sometimes have a dip in their pool.
