For those of you that I haven't told/shown this picture to, I recently was "bestowed" two Paddletail juvies while I was at the pet store (buying a piece of rock for the Eurycea). Long story short - Guy came in with 6-year old, complaining about how he didn't want to put the effort into caring for newts and just wanted something "simple" for his kid. I spent something like 20 minutes trying to give him tips on keeping newts (though I'm not an expert on C.o., which is what they were sold to him a couple days prior as and what I assumed they were.) So he gave them to me. Once I got a good look at them, I thought, "These don't look like C.o. ... they're too big/light and have strange shaped faces." And voila, Pachytriton labiatus!

The smaller one (forefront) is very thin, but the bigger one, (stalking in the background,) is a little better off. They're between 3.5-4 inches approximately right now and so far, there hasn't been any fighting or aggression, but I do plan on separating them soon just to be safe.

Nice, Good luck with them. And I hope that other guy treats those C.o.s right.

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
