Hello! I just bought two axolotls 3 days ago. Initially I was only going to buy one but there was an albino one who was floating and sideways when I bought him [i read through forums did extensive research and felt that it was gas, an impaction, or stress] either way he was eating fine and i decided i couldn't just leave him there to die in a small plastic container on the top of a counter at the aquarium store, if he was gonna die fine but not like that. Anyway with some fridge time and dark environment he came around and sinks to the bottom, eats alot, hes going potty, no curve in tail, he swims around....but it tends to be at the top of the water. He seems to like to float for extended periods of time then he will sink or hide but he likes to float (my wild one doesnt float at all, its that contrast that makes me go "hm,is this normal?") the temperature is 65, fine sand substrate, rock hides, PH in normal ranges, feeding him blood worms.

Is it normal for them to choose to float/swim at the top??? like i said hes fully capable of sinking and i do not see him struggle to sink , just is it normal?

Thank you guys in advance for any advice

one of mine does this all the time :) if all else seems ok and he is eating normally etc then I wouldn't worry. He probably just likes it!

I have one who loves to float about too! It's just a personality trait 9 times out of 10.

Thank you! I really appreciate it, he had me worried bc their personalities differ so much =)

I'm really surprised they'd just keep him in a tiny tub on the counter like that! That's terrible. Glad he got rescued!
