Hey guys :)
I am new to Axolotls and I just wanted to tell you about my set up and see if anyone had any comments or improvements.

I have two axolotls called Leviathan (male) and Echidna (female). They are both leucistic and around 5-6 inches. I have had them for about three weeks now and tried a verity of foods to see what they like. I have tried pellets, ghost shrimp, feeder guppies, and European night crawlers. The night crawlers, I cut in half for easier eating, though I'm not sure I really need to. They seem fine with the pellets, but I hate them because they are hard to clean up.

Okay, so the tank! It is a 29 gallon with a bio wheel filter rated for up to 70 gallons. I originally had a HOB filter rated for up to 30 gallons, but it just wasn't cutting it, so I upgraded. The new filter has a pretty powerful flow, but I reduce that by using those floating turtle docks that suction cup to the tank, they just sort of float under the filter. I used crayola play sand as substrate because it seemed the safest option. I considered bare bottom, but I read that they can slip around on that, so opted against it. They seem pretty happy with it, so I think its okay. They each have their own cave (which I found in the reptile section). They might be a little big for them now, but they will grow, right? In addition to the cave I have some fake plants, which the seem to love sitting in? No idea why. Its cute though.

Anyway, I was just wondering how my set up seems to someone experienced with axolotls. Anything I have done wrong or right would be greatly appreciated.

Everything sounds pretty good to me. :)

If they eat the night crawlers with out a problem then you can give those to them as their main diet. The other stuff can be given occasionally, then you won't have to clean after the pellets so much. :p

And they'll grow very fast so no need to worry that their hides are too big for them. My big guy leucistic is 9 months and around 11 inches already.

Have you tested your water parameters and temperature?

The water is around 68-70 degrees. It's being pretty constant. And I test the water once a week. Everything was acceptable last time I checked, but the ammonia was a little high. Less than .25, but more than 0. Everything else was good.
