Hi, I was recently given an adult (I think, its about 8 inches long) axie. I have just got a 12 gallon tank, water filter, and river gravel. Could anyone tell me should I use real plant life or fake and is there any advantage in either. It seems much happier in the tank than in its previous bowl.
It seems to stay away from the side of the tank that the filter runs into. I have the filter running on low but the water falls about 3 inches to the surface of the tank water and causes some turbulence to a depth of about 5 inches. I read that water flow can be a stressor for axie and am wondering if I should run the water down a plastic pipe to reduce the turbulence or am I being paranoid.
Also it spends alot of time staring out the front of the tank which is really cool for my kids and their friends. I assume that if he wanted some alone time he would go behind the rock and hide. Its colouration is a sort of olive colour speckled with black dots and red gills. Looks really cool but in the absense of a photo and on this limited description can anyone tell me what kind it may be and how do I tell if its male or female so I can stop calling it it.
Do axie like companionship or do they prefer to be alone.
I am new to all this so any and all advice would be gratefully received.
Thanks in advance
Ian
