The tank i got off ebay also came with a eheim classic 2213 filter, and i've no idea how to set it up or what i need for it. she gave me some sort of cottony stuff for it but don't know what to do with it or what else i need.
can anyone help me out?

Cool Ted22! I'm sure that information will be very helpful as it gives additional information that may not be in the manual.

@zoe - I don't personally own one, but I found the manual in pdf form - hopefully, you have adobe reader. If you don't you can download it for free at Adobe.com
http://www.eheim.com/base/eheim/pdf/en/anleitungen/afilter/2213_classic.pdf - English version starts about pg. 5

Good luck!

Hey, I have a Eheim 2224 just search for eheim filter media you should be able get a set for £20, it has two sponges and 2 sets of media, my one was really easy to set up and has not been a problem

thanks for all the info :)
also just wondering does the spray bar need to be above the water?

and should i leave the filter off to let the sand settle? because i can't see anything through the water at the moment it is so cloudy.

position the spray bar above water with the spray directed towards the glass to minimise water flow this will still disturb the water surface enough to provide airation but shouldnt be strong enough to upset your axie. You can buy little suction pad fittings if it diddnt come with any!

Your sand should settle eventually mine took nearly 2 weeks to clear but it could take longer for the very fine dust to settle. I guess with no filter and minimum current it should settle quicker but i do not know if this is reccommended or not. The cloudy water wont bother an axolotl providing the cloudy water is just sand dust and not another problem.

I'd turn your filter on when you get it; it will clean the water.

When I put new gravel in my fish tank (well half new gravel - lovely barbie pink (my dad chose it acutally)); I washed the gravel loads and loads, it was clean then I put it in the tank, set it all up and the water went pink (it was a new tank)...next morning (say 12 hours later) my tank was crystal clear and my filter sponges a lovely shade of pink :) haha

thanks again for the advice. i've got it on at the moment, has been for about 20 hours almost i'd say and it is already i little bit clearer at the bottom..am i safe to put my axolotl in? im only worried about not being able to find him to feed him..

As long as your tank is cycled and the water parameters are all good it should be fine murky water shouldnt bother your axie but if it is soo cloudy you cant see anything you might wanna hold out a little as u said it might be missions feeding and cleaning up waste. Has your axie got a suitable home at the moment while you are getting this tank sorted? If he's happy where he is it might be worth riding it out another 2/3days to see if the cloudyness improves!

Someone may correct me on the cloudy water and axie thing but as far as im aware theyre natural habitat is pretty dark and murky and mine diddnt have a problem with the sandy cloudy water but then again if you cant even see into it to feed the little monster your water is alot more cloudy than mine ever was, so its probably best to wait for more feedback before u put him in there!

Bet you cant wait to get ur axie into his new home! I wanna get mine a nice huge new tank but money is soo tight at the moment and mine is plenty big enough at the mo just cant stop spoiling him rotten! gonna go get him some more munchies in abit, nice juicy crickets mmmmm!

he's in a pretty small tank at the moment and he seems happy enough but he was in a pretty small one in the store i bought him from anyway. i am really anxious to move him to is new home though. it is slowly clearing up, this morning i could see more of the floor of the tank than before, so hopefully it keeps it up.
