can i ask how big the tank is and what type of filters they both are? Also what is on the ground

the tank is a jewel 96ltr and the old came with it and is in a rather large black box the new pump is a fluval for 60 to 90ltr my tank is 70ltrs full on the ground is sand

What I did when I switched filters was ran both in the tank for about a week, and then floated the filter media from the OLD filter in the tank for another week (without the filter being in the tank). This allows the bacteria to recolonize your new filter.

If you haven't changed anything in the tank but the filter, you'll have a good colony of bacteria living on the glass, decorations, and substrate already, and the bacteria will soon recolonize and you shouldn't have a problem.

great, my tank seems to have really settled well after a fungus problem when i put live plants in and lost leushus. i now put a cap ful of melafix in twice a week and small water changes every week and a bit. water looks crystal clear and levels are spot on and i have a very healthy killer axi who makes whole family laugh, the impovement in his health is amazing since i got him. the old filters media have about had it and are completely diff shape size etc.

id stop using melafix unless you have problems, while it is natural some people are iffy about it and being exposed to meds permaently (pretty small amounts though) cant be good.

joans suggestion was a good one, no chance of ripping the old media up to stuff it in the new filter? even if it is old you can replace it after a few weeks, just gives the filter a bit of a bacteria boost

Isobel, why are you using melafix? If you're using it as a 'preventative', why not instead try an isotonic solution of salt? Think of it as a constant, really dilute salt bath. It's healthier, and usually cheaper, in the long run. If you use melafix constantly, you run the risk of your axolotls developing diseases that are resistant to melafix.

In addition, the constant exposure may damage the liver as the active ingredients in melafix act much the same way as turpentine.
