I just got two fire bellied toads a week ago. Both of them are eating good, one only eating live food while the other eating live food and pellets/freeze-dried foods

I keep them in a semi terrestrial setup, is this ok?

It's a 10 gallon.

They don't seem very active...Mostly they just sit on the log in their pool all day.
Is there something I'm doing wrong?

Thanks,

I just had one of my toads disappeared! I don't think he escaped since the bars are too thin for him to squeeze through!

Did he bury himself?

Burrowing is common and he could easily be in there somewhere. Alternatively, they can squeeze through some very small openings. If there is a gap, seal it.

The lid is an Exo-Terra lid with the bars 5mm apart. I really doubt they could squeeze out.

Thanks for the reply!

I'll check around the dirt.

Setup looks great and the toads look healthy. With an Exo-Terra lid I doubt there was an escape, unless you left the lid open and walked away. He may have burrowed or hid under a log somewhere.

I've got five adult fire-bellied toads and around 20 toadlets from two spawnings earlier this year, though I'm no expert!

When we first got our toads, we were advised to employ a dry substrate such as orchid bark with a small water bowl such as you might use for turtles or terrapins. This sounded easy to clean and maintain and we took the advice. The toads were however fairly inactive. They spent most of the day hiding under moss or bark with occasional visits to the water, though they were more active especially in the water at night.

After a few months I decided to renovate their tank and put a piece of glass into the middle to divide between 3 inch deep water on one side and land on the other. As soon as the toads were returned to the tank they were noticeably more active and had spawned within a few weeks. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with your setup - it looks great - I'm only commenting on my experiences!

As far as your missing toad, I've often had similar feelings about individual toads of mine. I'm convinced they are not hiding anywhere but after a few days they always turn up. They do seem to likie burrowing at times!
