Hey everyone,

My name is Brooke, I just joined yesterday. I was looking up as much information on breeding as I could and I found this site very helpful, lucky I did as today I came home from getting more blood worms for my new axolotls and found my plants full of tiny white eggs. i wasn't planning on breeding them for quite some time.

I'm planning on making a hatchery tomorrow just so its ready when they come. the moment the first one hatches i will add the shrimp eggs and go from there.
also have a few questions on the hatchery as there are a few things im not quite sure of. like once you harvest the shrimp do you just turn the pump back on and keep the cycle going adding more eggs? or is it better to have 2 set ups and go back and forth from that. also how long do the shrimp live in the hatchery once they have actually hatched? and the guy at the pet shop also said they need to be fed 5-10 times a day does that sound about right?

Sorry about the 500 questions i would really just like to be 100% sure about what i am doing.

Any help would be appreciated and any tips on helping to raise them would be great

thanks so much!

I believe most people just harvest the brine shrimps when they hatch, then clean out the hatchery and start the whole process again. Brine shrimp are at their most nutritious when first hatched. Having two hatcheries on the go means a steady supply of hatched brine shrimp.

Baby axolotl should be fed twice a day....think 5 to 10 might be a bit extreme unless you've got nothing else to do and only feed them a tiny amount each time.

What colour are your parents?

Regards Neil

Thanks for that Neil. feel a bit less stressed now after knowing that. ha ha

The mum is spotted brown in colour and the dad is albino. I'm not 100% sure if that's right. as i found out yesterday the pet shop had both males and females in the tank together. But seeing as tho the eggs are white im guessing its a fair chance its the albino.

Would you know how long it takes for the mum to stop laying eggs?

Brooke

Females usually lay most of their eggs on the first night and then lay a few more on the second or even the third night.

White eggs would indicate the mother is albino and is not dependant on the colour of the male. Sounds like you have a Copper mother! Could you post a photo of the mother? All the best with your eggs.

Regards Neil

I will get on to the pics now! should be on here in an hour or so.

And just asking because she laid during the day about 100 + eggs then that night about 40-50 more and since coming home today i have found another 40 or so. im running out of plants haha.

Also is there anyone on here from Melbourne that would like to look after a few eggs of there own?

I have no dramas in trying to raise them. but to be honest i would just prefer everyone of them have the best chance of surviving and i dont know if that will be the case when i have 200 to look after. and especially when its my first time.

Thanks for the help Neil much appreciated

Brooke.

If you have the stomach you could always cull some of them before they start to develop. I know its sad but they are not alive yet :( Also you can make some fantastic breeding "plants" by chopping up some plastic bags and weighting them down... this is a great tutorial:

I looked after all 200 of mine, and it is A LOT of work. Most people only keep around 10 for good reason. good luck cant wait for pictures!

That is mumma bear! i have 3 others but they were all hiding so ill have to add the other little guys later.

Also before anyone says anything about the gravel. the fish shop near me is ordering some big pebbles so i can get rid of the gravel. the pet shop guy said that what i have now was fine but after reading up i think better safe then sorry. even thinking about sand. see how we go =)

Also i really don't think i could bring myself to cull any of them. i literally cant even kill a fly >< lol.

I would rather give them away or try my hardest to bring them all up. even if it might be difficult! I do have my mother and father here when I'm working so ill just show them what to do so hopefully everything will work out. fingers crossed

Thanks for posting a picture of your mother axolotl.....sure looks like a copper to me. Good luck with all your babies and let us know what colours you get out of the eggs.

Regards Neil

Thanks for all the help. and will do. =)
And thanks yellow for the plastic bag tip!

Back again!

I'm up to about stage 38 on
Axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) - Embryonic developmental stages
so not long now. is it safe to assume the round ones are infertile or not going to hatch?

Went in this morning and noticed one round egg was cloudy and covered in a fungus of some sort and the rest of the little baby Axies around this egg are becoming cloudy. I have since removed the egg along with a few others and added them with a batch i took out a few days ago that had stuff growing on them. just wondering if that egg will have effected the others around it? and if its safe to depose of the other eggs that are still round and have not formed? Oh also some of the bad eggs are hard some are not, any ideas of why this is?

also have noticed a few on the bottom of the tank are growing very slowly or have just stopped altogether. should i put them in a separate tank? and how often should i clean the water the eggs are in? i assumed the would be alright because there is so much water and no waste being produced. Should i change the water to the egg tank?

Hope i haven't caused this ><

Thanks in advance,

Brooke xo

What an AMAZING site! Thanks for posting that! Sorry I can't be of much help with your egg development questions. I received some eggs a bit over a week ago but mine were already up to stage 41/42.. They all hatched a few (maybe 5) days later.

Make sure you test out your method of live food breeding BEFORE the eggs hatch. You need to know that your method works AND how long it takes, before the babies are born. A few of us on here just learned that the hard way..

Good luck!

Thanks Aimz very helpful.

I think i will do the hatchery over the weekend and find out how it all goes. i just got my brine shrimp eggs off eBay 495 grams or close to that. A few days ago i also bought a little container just in case i didn't get the eBay eggs on time.

hope all goes well

heres an update ^.^

Just finished making both my brine shrimp hatchery's about 5 minutes ago, they seem pretty good no leaks or anything so pretty happy.
not long, most eggs have there gills now but still no colouring.
I keep thinking about the movie forest gump "its like a box of chocolates, you never know what your going to get" so exciting! haha

Will get a few big plastic containers today at some stage so i can move them all into that for the time being. looks like my brothers room is becoming a axolotl house haha. I will eventually put my male axie in the 2ft tank rather then have the divider in my 3ft. don't know if the 2ft will be good for another one either but would love to give my little guy a friend.

Spoken to some pet shops already and they are quite happy to buy them off me so that's something. Will have to check them out first tho just to make sure they will be alright.
