Need a holiday present for a young axolotl fan? Simon & Schuster has just published SPIKE, THE MIXED-UP MONSTER, written by Susan Hood and illustrated by Caldecott Honor Medalist Melissa Sweet. The book is a friendship story about adorable little Spike and his Mexican lakeside buddies--a duck, an armadillo and a Mexican vole. The book also includes photos and information about the real animals and a glossary of the few Spanish words used in the book. Axolotl.org's John Clare was a consultant on the book!

How lovely! I don't have little ones but I'm thinking I'll get me a copy anyway :)

Oh. My. Goodness!

I checked out Spike the mixed up monster from the library for my 10 year old daughter to read while she was home sick from school. It is sooo cute! I had to read it in the parking lot before leaving the library.

I think everyone ought to read it just once. The author is certainly an axie lover. Some of the things the characters say about him are the same things that have come out of our mouths while marveling at our own lotl.

Two thumbs up!

I was going to write a review of this lovely little story book, but found this one already :D

At the start of last week I read this story to my class of 4 year olds, they loved it, but they had no idea what an axolotl was. The following day one of my axolotl spent the day in the classroom, a few of the children were fascinated and asked endless questions.

This week, one of their tasks was to draw a picture from their favourite book. Maximus drew an axolotl and Alexandru produced the life cycle of a salamander ( we haven't worked out what the last part of his picture is yet ). :D
