New baby in the family

Hey all,

I have a gorgeous new little baby...Thanks to Hailz it's one of hers and is adorable!

My question is:
Stumpy is now in his/her own tank...30cm x 25cm and it's quite large for him/her at the moment. I am wondering what is the best way to feed him/her in this size tank. Stumpy is only about 3.7 inches so is still quite small. Blood worms don't work too well as they just float around the tank until sucked up by the filter, my axolotl pellets seem to sink so tried dropping them onto a little feeding dish which Stumpy ignores and doesn't seem to realize there's food there. Then i thought well i'll try the tweezers and fed chopped up earthworms and blood worms with the tweezers. This worked the first night but doesn't seem to be going down too well now. He/she attempts it once in a feeding session then decides it's just not a pleasant experience lol.

Apart from removing Stumpy from the tank to a separate feeding container (tried this too but this just stresses him/her out and then Stumpy won't eat anyway) does anyone have some suggestions for me? I'd really like to know how everyone else does it?

keep trying, he may just be wary and not associate all these different methods with food. little babies like movement so wiggle it round and he should catch on
lower the water level so your arm doesnt have to go swimming each time you try to feed him :p

Sharn,

Thanks for the advice, I've lowered the water level and tried again. Wouldn't take the earthworms or blood worms but the little guy eat about 3 chopped up mealworms so at least he's not starving...
I'm sure my axies are creating a conspiracy against me...I think they've gone on strike until they see mealworms lol.

lol. well its good that hes eatin at least some food. good luck and merry x-mas!

ooooooo I'm just so upset..Stumpy's not eating again. after the mealworms i fed him/her the other night he/she hasn't touched anything else since.

I'm beginning to feel a little stressed. Is it normal for a baby that size to not eat for 2 days?????

Mealworms can cause constipation. Their exoskeleton is too tough for some amphibians. My advice is to keep using chopped earthworms, fed by hand or with a tweezers. If he's rejecting them it's either because he's not hungry or perhaps the pieces were too big? At 3.7 inches, two days is not very long, he only needs to eat every 2-3 days anyway.

i think you should feed her about once every two days and just keep giving her the chopped up worms b/c there used as a staple it should be fine. good luck!

Thanks everyone...

I'll keep trying, if nothing else hunger should eventually override any of Stumpy's inhibitions about accepting different feeding methods.

lol agreed, an axolotls hunger will always take over. my axies never refuse any food lol.

Hey guys,

I've had a very sad day. Stumpy passed away today. The little guy wouldn't eat at all no matter what we tried and i think the heat and stress of a new environment finally took it's toll...

I think I'll just stick with my two adults who are both very healthy and well thank goodness...

RIP Stumpy...
