My Female Golden laid her first batch of eggs yesterday! yay im ready to raise babies again...now that i know what im doing!
but i was wondering about culling methods...particularly the ones that involve the least ammount of pain to the babies...
possible fathers of the eggs are; two wildtypes and a leucistic. I only wish to raise certain colors.
at seven days you should start to see color right?
are there any nice ways to cull after seven days?

ive already started removing eggs from the tank and culling via freezer, what about other methods while their still just a mass of confused cells?

please hurry if you have any ideas

How effective is the alcohol method on early stage eggs?
and what about my current method of the freezer-is that okay for eggs??

ETOH is very effective against eggs, larva and adults.

Freezing is not considered humane due to the possibility of pain but if the eggs were just laid then there are no pain receptors to be stimulated. Please read the linked article that Jen referenced.

you say you only wish to keep certain colours? iver never raised babies but i dont think you can tell their colours for the first few weeks id imagine? until they start actually being more than little blobs i think you might have a hard time picking the colours out (like i said, i dont know too much about babies)

we could tell the colours of ours a few days before they hatched (so say a week and a half).

remember to keep them well oxygenated - we think thats the mistake we made ! only 2 of ours are left ! :-(. Most stopped developping right near the end and thats the ony reason we can think of ..

Is there a difference between isopropyl rubbing alcohol and ethyl rubbing alcohol?

Yes,

Isopropyl is a larger alcohol than ethyl rubbing alcohol.

You would want to use ethyl alcohol, however the concentration of the alcohol also has to be correct..

An inexpensive source of ethyl alcohol (if you are of legal age) is grain alcohol, or one of the other strong spirits that is 140 proof (70%) or above. This can then be easily diluted.

There are some states (such as NM) that do not allow the sale of ethyl rubbing alcohol. If you can't find it, go to a real pharmacy and ask a pharmacist.

with the colour ting it wasnt until a few weeks that there was a really obvious distinction of colour. i thought they were all wild type (wild parents) but i ended up with gold, albino, wild, and dark-ish black, not complete black. but albino eggs you can tell.... i think. lol ive never had albino axoltols until the eggs hatched.

back with an update- i found some ethyl alcohol and used that it worked,i think... either way the're definately dead now. but the ones i am raising all turned out to be wildtypes...not sure how, the mother was a Golden albino i suspect the father was a wildtype. The batch shouldv'e come out with at least a few goldens right???

It all depends on the genotype of the adults.

The wildtype color is genetically dominant. Unless the male was a "carrier" for albino, the offspring should indeed all be wildtype.
