I was out collecting darter fish in a local river yesterday (SE Wisconsin) and I came across this little amphibian. I have no clue if its a larval form of a salamander, but it had 4 legs, it still had the feathery gills (which do not show up in the images) and was almost black with brown on its head. Any help would be great as I had never found anything like this in my local rivers.

That looks like a small Necturus sp.
They are neotenic animals that retain the gills throughout their lives.
They are also probably protected.
