Is the only way to obtain a Necturus maculosus by catching it from the wild? I am trying to find more information on keeping as a pet, but am having a hard time finding information.

Carolina Biological Supply sells wild caught ones, I think.

They're not commonly bred in captivity. They require pretty specialized setups, needing cold and flowing water, so most people don't keep them. Good luck!

Since nobody else posted any specific information, here is a caresheet for Necturus maculosus.

As for availability, catching your own is your best bet. Not only to you get to pick and choose the one you want, it won't come stressed out or near death like most of the ones that have been sitting in dealer's tanks for a while.
