Hullo all,

I have been reading recently about getting the chlorine out of tap water.

I think that there are 2 ways of doing this, letting the water stand or using chemicals. Personally Iam not keen on using chemicals, so that leaves letting the water stand.

But how effective is that method? And for how long? Is, as i imagine, the amount of surface area exposed to the enviroment important? If that is the case can better results be obtained by pumping the water about so a 'waterfall effect' is obtained?

Sorry for the mass of questions, but I really want to avoid using chemicals.

Oh while we are discussing chlorine what chlorine level measuring methos do people here recommend?

Cheerio and thanks

I have done some experiments on chlorine level using a small liquid test kit that is sold for swimming pools. This test works fairly well for testing tap water.

I did some experimentation where I left an open bucket of water sitting and tested it every day or so. The results were something of a surprise. Bubbling air through the water had little effect on how quickly the chlorine dissipated. (I didn't do any testing with a waterfall arrangement, so I don't know if this would get the same results.) Temperature, however, had a much greater effect. At around 65F(18C), it took a week or more for the chlorine to dissipate (i.e., no detectable reading with the test kit). At 72F(21C) it took only about 2 days.

When in a hurry I just bring my water to a boil turn it off and let it cool. no chemicals and it only takes a hour or so to cool for use

Wow, brilliant that is exactly the kind of information I wanted.

Thankyou ever so much.
