Hey, has anyone seen the Midas add for brakes on National Geographic channel? A kid is chasing some girls with something, they run, he drops it and runs back to rescue it, and the woman, who has had her brakes done by Midas, stops in time to save the boys life. He picks it up, and " surprise" what is the object of fear, a tiger salamander. Looks like a nicely blotched eastern. Has anyone seen this? Pretty cool to see a caudate in a nationally advertised commercial, eh?

Yes, I have seen it too. I was all excited and pointed it out to my sister - but that just reaffirmed to her that I am a little odd...

Along a similar line, has anyone seen the North Carolina Geiko ads where they state that the gecko is the state amphibian of North Carolina? I always thought that was a little odd.

Hi Heather, a friend of mine who was keeping various species of fire salamanders, some in plastic sweater boxes stacked on top of one another, and some in a natural vivarium type of setup told me all his family and friends say "why keep animals you never see?". So, the odd factor is alive and well for those of us who keep these guys. People just don't get it.
Kristen, haven't seen that particular add, but I'm not surprised at all, are you?

The thing that gets me about that Midas advertisement is that the salamander makes some kind of weird croaking/sqwaking noise. Bizarre.

I've temporarily caught a lot of tiger salamanders in my time and I have yet to hear that one.

Geico ran the same type of ad here in Maryland. It said something like, "the state reptile may be the terrapin, but the geico gecko is the state amphibian." Ad agencies must think people are really stupid.
