Hello everyone, I just joined your forum but have been referring to it for a while.
Can anyone tell me what kind of newt this is? The pet store owner got me a pair of them at the Hamburg PA Expo and he forgot the name of the species. But he knew I'd go crazy for them and he was right!

thanks!

Strauch's Spotted Newt - Neurergus strauchii strauchii. A beautiful newt, though I don't keep them myself, at least not yet. There are several members here that breed them here. You can check out this link for care suggestions:

I see you're in Dutchess County...I'm in Sullivan. Sounds like you've got a good shop there on the other side of the river...do they carry newts often?

Looks good. I keep mine in a little more water and offer cork bark for them to crawl up on. I feed them mostly blackworms and chopped earthworms. As long as you keep them cool and watch water quality you should have no problem.

Wow, what a quick response, and thank you!
I also have a little piece of wood in there for them to crawl on. One of them still has very small gills left. The water is about 1 1/2 inches deep. Well, now that I know what they are, I can read up on them! They are breathtakingly beautiful, I think!

Over here in Dutchess not far from where I live is a pet store called "Animabilia." They usually only carry firebellies and sometimes paddletails and warty newts. But they know I'm crazy for newts, so I gave them my wish list (Emperor newt, Taricha Torosa, any members of the Triturus family, especially marmoratus and alpestris). So far they got me an Emperor Newt and a pair of Triturus vulgaris, although these last two unfortunately did not survive. Here is a picture of my Emperor Newt, Princess Elektra (although I'm not really sure if she is a girl). I'm not sure exactly what species of Emperor Newt Elektra is, I know there are a few.

I've never been to the Hamburg show, but now I want to go. The pet store owner can't find the card of the guy who sold him my magical mystery newts but he said this guy also had some Triturus newts, so I'll have to go down there if I want to contact him.

Dawn, I strongly suspect I know where your animals came from. Check the For Sale in the US section of the classifieds here:

Try David L and Michael Shrom for what you're looking for... I may be able to help with Triturus next spring, but I think they can help you now...Thanks for the lead. I'm looking for warty newts and any extra sources are greatly appreciated. You might want to check PetStop in Newburgh from time to time as they have had Taricha's in the past. Thanks again and good luck with your newts!

Do you think that if I post a picture of Elektra's privates "she" can be sexed at her age (about a year)?

Well, here goes. Can you hear her in the background yelling, "Mom, MOM! Wait a minute for me to put on my underwear!"

Here's a better view, but I think Elektra has had it with me for one day!

Looks like a female. They are not simple to sex unless they are in breeding condition.

based on that last view, I'd say female, but I'm not the best Tylo sexer without both to compare, so I'll defer to greater minds than mine...

Well, thanks everyone for all the help! Something about the way she bats her eyes always makes me think she is a girl.
I wish I had a couple more days off to devote to doing nothing but posting pictures of my newts, cleaning the house and reading the forum.

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
