I was looking through the frozen aquatics food section at Petsmart today and noticed "Mysis shrimp." They had the highest percentage of crude protein out of any of the other foods available. Anyone know more about it?
Mysis shrimp are also known as opossum shrimp and are mainly found in brackish and salt water habitats but at least here in the USA and some other countries there aer species adapted to living in fresh water. (Such as Mysis relicta in the great lakes).
As far as I know all of the mysid shrimp sold in the pet stores originate from the freshwater lakes in the US.
The brackish water and marine species have been used for a very long time to assay toxicity of different substances when dissolved in water.

Hi Angelina,
Larval newts are often initially difficult to get to feed on any nonmoving food items so while I believe mysids to be a good food item for them, you may need to hand feed the larva to simulate the movement of a prey item. Some species will take nonmoving prey at different ages/sizes but all of the species I have worked with needed to be pretty good sized before I didn't have to use live foods, or hand feed them.

If you are in the Uk you can buy live mysis shrimps from AquaLogistix... http://www.aqualogistix.co.uk/ but im not so sure that marine invertebrates would be a good diet for freshwater animals??? Too much salt probably.
I have a large 30 gal 'muck bucket' that is full of sponges and stuff like that.. some gammarus shrimp got introduced years ago with plants and it is now a gammarus farm, i can harvest it by lifting out sponges and dipping them in a smaller bucket to get the shrimps out
Hey everyone, just want a little advice. Its 55 - 60 celcius in my Salamanders tank. Hes curled up and tyring ti bury himself, Im assuming hes too cold. I was wondering if he would benefit from a heated rock cave (since he LOVES his cave) that I could set on low? I NEVER see him curled up and trying to bury himself unless his tank sits at 63 degrees celcius or lower. So I am assuming hes a little uncomfortable.
He also seems a little sluggish, again, assuming hes cold. Having heating trouble with the new house right now. What do we think? Was thinking of grabbing this for him since its got very low, medium, and higher medium heat settings that exude heat downward inside the rock cave but ALSO exudes it UPWARDS outside of the rock cave, effectively keeping the tank itself a little warm. Seems like it miiiight be a little small for him though, my guy is about 7 inches from tip of his nose tothe tip of his tail. What do we think? https://www.amazon.com/Reptile-Simulation-Adjustable-Temperature-Tortoise/dp/B0CH1DPGBC
