My Tiger Salamander (?)

Heres a couple pictures of my tiger salamander. Or at least I think that's what he is. I got him from a local pet store, it was kind of sad. I saw his price had been marked down several times and I can see why. He's the meanest little dude in the world. Always biting, but thats what makes him cute.

This is him hanging by a plant.

And this is him swimming! Dont ask me why the URL spells out "nazis". Its a random generator.

Hello and welcome to caudata!

Yes that is a tiger salamander. if I were you i'd make his terrarium completely terrestrial, tiger salamanders like to burrow, and if they are seen swimming it can be a sign of stress. but he's a beautiful animal none the less!

He wasnt really swimming back or forth or anything. He was just wanting to go to the other side of the tank (its separate land masses). Should I still worry?

And youre right, I need to place some stuff so he can burrow. Thanks, Ill set it up for him today. Would some (clean) leaves, dried spaghum moss, and maybe some soil work out for him?

He may be swimming because he doesn't have an adequate area to burrow. I agree with William - the set up for a tiger should be terrestial (3-4 inches of substrate) with a small, shallow water dish - to help with humidity and in case he wants to take a 'dip'. Jump over to the newt and salamander help forum - there is a lot of info there on how to establish your vivarium for a terrestial. See also:

Alright, Ill try some of those things. If need be Ill buy a 10 gallon tank for the little dude. Thanks for the help you guys.

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
