This morning my pink girl was fine, behaving normal. My family and I went out for the day and came home around 4:30pm and I noticed that the right side of her mouth was bleeding. I have no idea what happened. When I carefully took her out to examine her (my hands were wet), when she opened her mouth (I didn't force her, she did it on her own) I noticed a small cut on her bottom lip. I placed her back in the fish tank and all she wanted to do is stay out of the water, so I have a turtle dock and there was her friend another Spanish ribbed newt on it and so I placed her with that one and she snuggled up to her and has been there ever since. It is now 10pm and her mouth is still bleeding (not gushing, but as her mouth is closed, blood is around her mouth). What can I do for her? Her ribs are showing on her right side, but not her left. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. I had her since 2015 and I can't let anything happen to her, she's my baby and I have a 17 year old son, who has Asperger's, who is also very attached to her.

Update: This morning she passed away. I have no idea why? I noticed there were cuts around her mouth and that was it. She was 7 years old. I have two other newts and they are behaving normal, do I have to worry about them? I have a vet that takes care of reptiles, but not amphibians, I am at a total loss.

i'm terribly sorry for your loss, i'm not knowledgeable enough in newts to give any advice, but as an autistic individual i do worry for your son. being autistic or having aspergers (which is a bit of an outdated diagnosis, and is considered to be apart of autism) means that we tend to bond better with animals than humans, and feel deeply empathetic for others, human and nonhuman. it is always hard to lose a pet, but especially so for neurodivergent people. watch out for him, and be sure he feels loved and room to process his grief. i wish you the best.
much love,
-ren

Thank you so much for those sweet words. You have no idea how much that means to me.

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
