My newly hatched Axies

How are they going on the Daphnia?

I'm surprised they are eating it as they normally only eat food based on movement at that age, so they usually need to be fed live food. Have you actually seen them eating it though? If so, thats pretty interesting :)

They look cute, you seem to have quite a few different colours as well, I've got 50 larave that started hatching on 24th of June and they are wildtype, golden albino, melanoid, melanoid albino (white) and a few randoms that I don't know what colour they are. My white albinos have tinges of yellow on their heads (thats how I know they are melanoid albinos - also their eyes aren't reflective when I shine a torch over them) wich should fade a little as they grow, but I can see a white albino in one of your pics, it looks close to the surface on the left of the photo, it doesn't seem to have any trace of yellow which is cool :) Is it just the photo or is it lacking yellow in real life?

Mine have nearly got their front arms now, just waiting for their little fingers to sprout, they grow so fast!

iChris is from Perth isnt he? I'm from Perth too :)

they're coming along well, and what a mix in colors you have too. it should make for some fine looking axies.

for anyone wondering, these are the parents. the golden albino is the mum and the melanoid is the dad. the albino is about 3 years old and I'm not too sure about the male though but I have a feeling he's probably not even 2 years old yet, but he's quite big.

why yes, I am as a matter of fact! there are a few perthies on this forum!

Nice looking axies and tank, where did you get them? :) are those plants real or fake? I'm thinking of ideas for when my larave are old enough to be put into an aquarium but I can't decide whether to get real plants or fake...

the plants are all fake silk ones. I do grow peace lilies in the trickle filter above the tank though, it works wonders for water quality.

my albino came from avid aquaria on railway ave in kelmscott and the melanoid from a city farmer's store.

the tank itself is a 2.5FT 120L bow-front tank that's cooled by a chiller and dimly lit. this is the tank as it is currently and has looked for about 8 months now lol

i have mine on frozen daphnia aswell. i did that with my firstlot of hatchlings nearly a year ago and i had great results. i have tried with the last 3 lots microworms, live daphnia and brine shrimp and had no luck they all died. this time they are growing and if you watch them the jerk forward a little bit when there eating and they have little round bellies, i would recommend using frozen food if you cant get live and have a airstone or 2 on low to help move it around. how old are your hatchlings. mine are bout 2 weeks old

i just added a couple of pictures of mine hope you done mind

Yer I have actually seen them eat the frozen daphnia. I think all axies go by smell not movement it wouldn't make sense going by movement since axies have terrible eye sight. i have heard from breeders that they use shaved chicken liver and grind it up into a powderly texture. i do have microworms and have put some of them in the tank the axies don't seem to mind them but the frozen daphnia seem to be best because theres enough in the tank that i only have to feed to axies every 3rd day. i get the excess daphnia out with a seringe and do a 75% water change. @Chris you show off LOL. you said you were after a whitey mate well there was a few whiteys in this bunch. if you want later when they are older i'll send you one. so far i only lost 4 they were born messed up where surrounded in a weird air bubble and just died a day after hatching.

Newly hatched axolotls feed by sight, their sense of smell develops latter. They will feed of stationary food but are more attracted to food which moves.

Maybe. All that matters in the end is that they are eating and there stomachs are dark which implies theres food in them. They generally eat just like adult axies from what I have seen snap at the food and then you watch them kind of chewing it and thats it.
