Thank you to Kaysie, Chris, and ZoeT94 for advice on helping me set up my tank, and especially to Michael Shrom and Alfred Ojeda for the axolotls themselves. Enjoy!

Thanks for the compliment. Alfred and I have worked together on some projects for years. He is one of the "old timer" amphibian enthusiasts. I'm glad the axolotls found a good home.

you have some fine looking lotls there.

you may want to swap those pebbles for sand though. some of them look big enough for your axies to swallow by mistake and this can be fatal.

Thanks for the advice Chris, I knew about the pebble problem so I bought the biggest pebbles the store had available because I thought they were too big to be a problem. But if you think some of them might still be the wrong size I'll have to look into it. How do I exactly tell which ones are a good size?

pebbles must be bigger than your axie's head.

I would suggest using sand. washed play sand works a treat.

Thanks Chris. I was considering sand but it's harder to clean than rocks. Are most of the rocks in the tank okay? Because if so I can pick out the biggest rocks and buy more of the bags of big pebbles from the pet store. What I like about rocks is that it's easier to use a water vacuum, you know, the kind that attaches to a faucet and you run the water and it creates negative pressure and sucks dirty water from under the rocks. If most are the rocks are problematic, I'd probably go sand, but if most of the rocks are the right size, I'd rather pick out the bad ones.

I would definitely change those pebbles, sand is pretty easy to clean tbh. I have black sand and it shows all the dirt and left over food up really well, I then use a siphon and a turkey baster to suck it out, the sand doesn't lift up only the dirt, I was amazed by how easy it was!

That first axolotl looks melanoid, not wildtype.

I agree with Chris and Ash. Most of your pebbles are the wrong size. They need to be bigger than your axolotl's head. But really, sand is much easier to clean than pebbles. Pebbles trap SO much waste underneath them, you wouldn't believe it. Most of the waste with sand just sits on top.

They are correct.

And no problemo!

I thought sand would be difficult to clean as well, but using a turkey baster really makes it quick and easy.

That first picture is totally adorable

MAJOR JEALOUS OF THE FIRST AND GOLD ONES!!! all of them are nice :D
