Hello, my friend has 2 axolotls (unknows genders) and just this morning she seen one of them floating on top of the tank, it took a few hours for it to float down to the bottom a little bit but it came back up again, her tank temp never gets too hot and the tank size is unknown she got them at around december. she feeds them pellets and about every week she gives them chicken liver. she dose not have a test kit. what should she do?

I've read they do this when they're either constipated or about to lay a big one (not an egg). It could just be the animal being a little silly too.

Definitely get a test kit in case it is the water.

Well here's something interesting I read up just now.

Is your friend soaking the pellets before she feeds her axolotl? If not, I think we've found the likely culprit.

i dont think she saoks her sinking pellets, i will have to ask her to do that

first thing to do is get a liquid test kit. when a axolotl is floating it is a good idea to take note of the condition of its gills.
although floating at times is normal although frequent floating can cause stress because instinctually floating leads them open to predators and so the cause needs to be found.
if it is the pellets soften and soak them before hand or change to a different pellet, there is also a large variety of frozen and live food that axolotls can eat instead, if its due to gulping air oxygenate the water more with additional air-stones, if its the water parameters tub the axolotls and get the tank sorted and yes even if one is ok it doesn't mean everything is ok.
also don't feed chicken liver to often as it is high in fat and can affect the axolotls liver and cause issues.

Hey everyone, just want a little advice. Its 55 - 60 celcius in my Salamanders tank. Hes curled up and tyring ti bury himself, Im assuming hes too cold. I was wondering if he would benefit from a heated rock cave (since he LOVES his cave) that I could set on low? I NEVER see him curled up and trying to bury himself unless his tank sits at 63 degrees celcius or lower. So I am assuming hes a little uncomfortable.

He also seems a little sluggish, again, assuming hes cold. Having heating trouble with the new house right now. What do we think? Was thinking of grabbing this for him since its got very low, medium, and higher medium heat settings that exude heat downward inside the rock cave but ALSO exudes it UPWARDS outside of the rock cave, effectively keeping the tank itself a little warm. Seems like it miiiight be a little small for him though, my guy is about 7 inches from tip of his nose tothe tip of his tail.
