So yesterday i was cleaning the tank in a hurry and while i was syphoning, the water went only a little bit below the filter and it started to gurgle and i shut it off because i didn't wanna burn it out. When i finished cleaning, i turned it back on and nothing. As i was already in a hurry, i proceeded to rip off the bottom of it and see if i could clean it and make it work again & this is what i found...

After i cleaned it :) and now it works again.

That's beneficial bacteria; they grow everywhere.

You should clean your filter regularly to keep it in proper working order. As you can see, 6 months is a little too long to wait.

Yes; but it was never ever this bad when i had cichlids :S

axolotls are not fish.

As Kaysie said, 6 months is to long to go between filter cleaning on an axie tank... unless you have a small ecosystem built up, with natural filtration and live plants, etc.

Axie's cause a lot more solid waste then any fish ususally would so require better vigilance on the mechanical filters

I pull my filters apart every week. I am amazed the amount of grot my little mate can produce. And because its thick n slimy if left to build up will burn ur pump out cause its working too hard.. I am finding he is hard on the media to, replacing it more often then i do my other tank.

My axolotl tank filter is usually spotless. However my fish tank filter is like that after 2 weeks, maybe worse. The smell isn't very pleasant either. :(

I find that my filters get like that if there is a high fish mass to water ratio. Not used filters with my axolotls yet. And the size of the filter makes a difference too.

I clean my filters mid-week and I have to say at times the Axolotls filter can be just as dirty as the filter coming out of my shubunkins tank.... Other times it is spotless.....

I have to say if on the weekend when I clean the tank if I find losts of poo then the filters will be clean, if I dont find any then the filter will be ready to walk off on it's on come mid-week cos it that dirty....

I just couldn't believe i let it get that bad! I didn't think it would since it was brand new back in Novemberish. Lesson learned! I am not spending money on another filter.
