Hey everyone,

as the title says ... my axolotls have just laid eggs for the first time ... I didn't think they were old enough! (what age can they start breeding!?)

I just want to know what to do now!? If I leave the eggs in there will they eat them? I don't intend on raising baby axolotls just yet ...

I'm just a bit baffled as I really wasn't expecting this at all at this time of the year ... I thought they only bred in spring ...

Any help/advice/info would be greatly appreciated :)

If you leave them in till they hatch mum and pop will eat them ( well mine waited till they hatched) it seemed more natural to me to let them do that.

Hi

This time of year is very common, i think from between december to april, mine have also laid eggs just the other day

;)

If you leave the eggs in there to hatch, it's veyr likely some of them will be eaten

If you don't want to raise them yourself, then i'm sure there are lots member who would be happy to take them.

I reccomend that you take the axolotls out of the tank and put them in a temp container/tank but make sure the female has finished laying eggs as the process can take many hours. mine took about 36 hours

Take the eggs out of the tank using your hands (wash your hands first in hot water) then put them into a container which has some of your tank water in it, keep the container in a safe place (without a lid)

It's best to keep the water cold about 14 - 18 degrees, that is because they will take longer to hatch, giving you time to find people to give them to.

I gathered that the poster does NOT want to raise larvae.

Since the eggs are still very new, you can take them out and freeze them without causing any discomfort. You can also leave them in the tank and mum and dad will munch on them.

I think i read somewhere, possibly on axolotl.org that around this sort of time (wintertime) is when axolotls do spawn/lay eggs, never the less congratulations. i'm sure a few people may be interested in having some of your eggs off of you, theres also the possibility of selling them, which could contribute to the upkeep of the axolotls you already have, i paid £7.50 for 20 eggs, its something to think about. Also its very interesting watching them evolve from eggs to hatchlings, although there is a bit of work involved. Maybe you already know all this but just thought i'd mention it. Good luck whatever you decide

Question for kaysie, when you say you can 'freeze the eggs', do you mean actually freeze them and if so, when they defrost/unfreeze, would they begin to grow? looking forward to the answer!

Thanks for replying! :D

Well if anyone is interested in these eggs, please let me know, otherwise the mom and dad will be munching them soon o_O

John, I meant freezing as a form of euthanasia. It is only appropriate for very young eggs. It is not appropriate for any animal that is old enough to have a developed nervous system.

Thanks for clearing that up for me, feel slightly stupid, but if i had'nt asked i would'nt have known, i think i was thinking along the lines that women can have their eggs frozen, and obviously now i realise that the eggs laid by the axolotl are already fertilised and growing. My brain is not fully functional today haha, Enjoying learning about this awesome creature, so much info on here, learnt so much, so much still to learn. Thanks again

I know someone on frog forum that would love some eggs. You should post them on there

Aly, There is a section of this forum which is for selling or giving away things, so you could advertise your eggs on there as well as websites like preloved.com Or as kaysie said, you can cull them by freezing.

That's enough pressuring the poster to sell the eggs. Now that she knows of the option, it's ultimately up to her.

I dont think anyone was trying to put pressure on her to sell them, just if she dont want them and wants money then sell lol. And john its good you asked, people normallyget.criticised but in my opinion it takes a lot cleverer person to ask than never know and be a *******

I'm not feeling pressured at all! I'm happy that people have given me advise and different options!

I've decided to raise the lil guys, I have a friend interested in them :)

Awww yay! If you need any info Ill try and help as I've got 200 larvae at the moment and feeding them was a nightmare as none of them hatched! Good luck!!!! :D
