Really needs help

Hi all.
I have had my axy in the fridge for two and a half weeks as thought he may be constipated. Put him back in his tank yesterday as the bloating had gone down. Problem I am having now is that he won't eat! He is taking food from my hand but spitting it straight out again.
any ideas or input greatly appreciated.

Thanks xx

Re: Really needs help. please

Hi. Please can someone help. I am really concerned :(

Re: Really needs help

Just curious what are you feeding your axie at the moment? Has he pooped at all since you said he had some kind of constipation?

Re: Really needs help

Besides bloating, were there any other signs that you thought may be constipation? Has he pooped since fridging him? How long ago before you offered food did you move him back into the tank?

Please help. My axy has been under the weather recently. I put him back in his tank. He still hasn't eaten and has turned a really pink colour. Any ideas please? ?

What are your water parameters and temperature?

Temperature is 18C as per normal. Not sure re paras. Need new testing kit. Has only happened today but he has been poorly for thdee weeks. Can't get him to eat anything :(

Get the test kit asap. And meanwhile do a big water change incase there's something wrong with the water. And don't forget to dechlorinate the water.
What are you feeding him?
A picture of the axie and the tank might also help determine what's wrong.

He has been in the fridge as he was really bloated. Didn't change anything so put him back in tank three days ago. New water etc. He has not eaten since before I put him in fridge. Normally has earthworms.

It's normal he wouldn't eat in the fridge or right after that because his metabolism slows down in the cold. Is he still pink or did it pass? Did he get pink right after you took him out of the fridge? If so it could just be the temperature change. Did you follow the fridging guide on this site?
How did the bloating start? Was it sudden or did it start gradually?
Could you get a picture of him from the side?

Hi Keiko. Thanks for responding. He is still pink. Was couple of days after he came out of fridge. Tge bloating started quite suddenly and he was really white. Almost ghost like. I will attach pic I have.

I am not sure if it is relevant but there was also some really strange thing in his tank which no-one seems to know! Will put pic of that too as this is when it all started.

Thanks for your help xxx

Looks like a piece of partially digested food. Maybe a worm.

If the soles of the feet are black along with the area round the cloaca, it is likely a bacterial infection affecting the skin. This will continue to develop until treated. The quick onset of bloating should be taken seriously, as health can deteriorate rapidly. Try to get him into a vet for treatment.

Thanks for the information. I have today put him back in the fridge as he has still not pooped or eaten:( Unfortunately, there is no vet anywhere around where I live that can look at him. I popped into my local reptile shop and they suggested re-fridging. Apart from ghat no ideas.
It is awful not being able to help him as I saved his life :(

Re: Really needs help

Hi. Sorry I haven't updated. I have also got a thread in general axolotl care as I have no idea what way forward to go! I took him out of the fridge although he still hadn't pooped. He was fine for three days although still not eating. Then turned a bright pink colour and looked awful. I have today re-fridged him as I have absolutely no idea what to do to help him. He is still quite bloated underneath, but looks so skinny head on.
I have tried everything I can think of so thought fridging may be best way forward for now???
Any input would be really appreciated xxxx

Hi,
I believe that thing in the tank could possible be a spermatophore (sorry for my spelling if that's wrong) but if he's producing them maybe that is the reason for his color change? If we can get Keiko's opinion on it thatd be great. Hopefully he recovers shortly from it either way.

I second that. I was just reading about insect reproduction. I just never thought to compare that of an amphibian to this case.

Re: Really needs help

It is usually best to keep it in one thread as this will make it easier for people to help and also save you time as well. But I have seen your other thread. I agree with Elise that veterinary care is probably needed in this case as the sudden onset of bloating can be a sign of a serious issue. I understand you don't have a vet available in your area though. I am not sure what advice I can really offer as I believe vet treatment may be needed. However maybe someone with more experience can offer further advice?

There are a lot of pictures and descriptions on here. Says they are "cone-like." And females get very bloated but I've heard males also turn a little pink with the increased blood flow and whatnot.

Re: Really needs help

Thanks for responding. He looks awful this morning. Is bright pink and really not happy :( not holding out much hope but I will keep you posted x

Hey everyone, just want a little advice. Its 55 - 60 celcius in my Salamanders tank. Hes curled up and tyring ti bury himself, Im assuming hes too cold. I was wondering if he would benefit from a heated rock cave (since he LOVES his cave) that I could set on low? I NEVER see him curled up and trying to bury himself unless his tank sits at 63 degrees celcius or lower. So I am assuming hes a little uncomfortable.

He also seems a little sluggish, again, assuming hes cold. Having heating trouble with the new house right now. What do we think? Was thinking of grabbing this for him since its got very low, medium, and higher medium heat settings that exude heat downward inside the rock cave but ALSO exudes it UPWARDS outside of the rock cave, effectively keeping the tank itself a little warm. Seems like it miiiight be a little small for him though, my guy is about 7 inches from tip of his nose tothe tip of his tail.
