Hi,
I have 2 Axolotls for about 2 years and a half now. They were doing fine, but in the last few weeks i noticed one of them was floating a lot and was a little unresponsive.
I did a big water change and cleaned the tank (it was a bot messy because my filter wasnt working but he didnt get better. After seing no improvements i tried fridging the sick axolotl for almost a week doing daily water changes (100%) with dechlorinated water but instead of getting better i noticed he was starting to "peel off" how skin... Everyday he was with more skin, looks like he's shedding. After i had the tank fully cleaned and empty (i threw my living plant away because i thought it could be amonia poisoning due to the plant), i got him back in the tank and he seemed to be better in the next few days.

Today i noticed he was floating around for a long time and after i got him to move (i thought he might be dead), i noticed his jaw line (under jaw region) is completely pink (it is very noticeable because he is a wild axolotl).

I dont know what to do anymore! Can someone please help me??

Thank you very much for the attention!

Hey, I just wanted to jump in and ask how your axolotl is? I have no idea what's wrong with your little guy, I've never heard of this, the only thing I can think of is the parameters of your water, the quality, might be off somewhere.

Like, I cannot stress this more, if you don't already have a API Fresh Water Master kit, please order one or get one from the pet store. They test all the water quality parameters you would need to check and they have an easy to read guide on how to read said parameters. Like the chemicals display specific colors, some mean good, some are bad.

When I have had problems with my axolotl, it's been because of the tank cycle but since you've had your axolotls 2 years, I'm sure you know all about that. Has anything changed? New water company? An accident at the water treatment facilities? Was there any improvement after you got rid of the plant? Also, is he eating? Please update us.

Has anyone gotten back to you? There are several more experienced axolotl owners here and I sincerely hope they help soon. Can you please post some photos of your axolotl? That will help the others more, they may see something and get an idea of what is wrong.

Wait, what kind of substrate do you have? Ultra fine sand or raw glass bottom?

Please keep your axolotl tubbed with 100% water changes

What water conditioner do you use?
Tank parameters? actual numbers not "good"

What do you feed?
What temp is your tank?

Thanks for replying! im going to order a API Kit, since i dont have one! i kept searching for information and for what it looks like i think he might be morphing. He started developing eyelids and keeps coming up for air. I think the plant dying might have started an amonia spike and he started morphing to "defend" himself.

The only thing i find odd is that the other axolotl is completely fine.... The gills are great, never comes up for air, nothing...

He moves a bit more since i got him back in the tank but i really dont know if he is really morphing or very ill...
As for the bottom, its fine sand.

On picture 4 you can barely see the pink area beneath his "gills".

Im posting some pictures of them so you can have a look. (Note: in order to take the photos, i needed a light on top of the tank so the pictures could have some quality, so they look brighter in some parts due to the light. usually i dont have any light so i dont hurt they're eyes).
