I am going to get a newt for the first time this summer and was wondering if one or two would be better. I have been told that they are happy alone, but is this really so? They seem to be pretty independent but I've seen so many people with newts together that I wonder if he/she would like a companion or just another critter with them. I have read that toads and most other animals aren't a good idea to mix with newts, so I won't be putting my fancy guppies in with him/her (besides, they need almost 80 degree temps, so that's a big no..). Any suggestions??? Thanks, Lindsay

You could get another newt of the same species probably, I have heard of some newts that are hostile to others (paddle tail newts) of the same species. If you can, get a breeding pair.

I personally like to watch how the newts interact, but more newts equals more work. By that I mean you have to watch the newts when feeding to make sure one isn't getting all of the food.
