So all being well (fingers crossed), weather permitting and all that (now I've said that it'll rain again), the absolute bargain of a six by two tank, should finally come into the house tomorrow and the axies will hopefully be in by Sunday
Thankfully the neighbours have four sons who have been offered for assistance in moving the beast! The other half has been drafted into helping me customise the stand a little. The guy who owned it previously has built a very sturdy base, but it's two foot high and I'd like to make it just one. Then build a cabinet at the side for the filter, some sort of chilling device and an air pump.
The new filter (Tetratec EX1200) turned up just under two weeks ago and has been running in the four foot with the old filter, so should be ready to be on it's own? Although a little clarification on that would be great. It is such a low current that the axies like chilling out on the spray bar! All the decorations and sand that is in their current tank will be going straight from the old into the new and shouldn't need to turn off either of the filters for more than moving from one tank to the other. I'm hoping that I wont lose that precious cycle.
Thanks to Mereb's very detailed thread I am hoping to do something similar, don't have the finances at the mo to do much though. Could I use brand new plastic plant pots to create some hides? Or are they on the avoid list?
Gosh, that's a long post! I'll put up some pics tomorrow (hopefully!) :D

It takes about a week for a filter to become seeded, but it may not have enough bacteria to fully support the tank without an ammonia spike. If you're just switching tanks might as well move both filters. If you're just adding a new tank I'd keep a close eye on the water parameters, but 2 weeks should give it enough bacteria to almost be cycled, if not completely cycled. Plastic plant pots should be fine, soaking them for a few days wouldn't hurt.

Thanks for that :) I was thinking it would probably be better to run them both for a while, there will be more water for them to filter.
I shall put the pots into soak for a while :)
