i've just read that lissotriton boscai has been split into two species, l. boscai, and l. maltzani! anyone else read this, or know anything else about it?
Up to today it is still too early to accept full species rank for the boscai-newts of southern Portugal. Molecular data are awaited to confirm this and if so the name Lissotriton maltzani (Boettger, 1879) would indeed be available.
cf. www.herpetologica.org/documentos/lista_patron_2005.pdf
Well after splitting it up in Lissotriton, Mesotriton and now Ommatriton there's not much left of the otherwise large genus Triturus....
Indeed the maltzani seems to be under confirmation.
Also see the split for Salamandrina ( I think I posted that one in the common section).
