Me and two of my kids visited a local 'wildlife' pond and paid £3 for an hour 'pond dipping'. What joy! We found loads of tadpoles, ramshorn and the other type of pondsnails that I forget the name of and joy of joys NEWTS! While my 5 year old was busy catching tadpoles and snails, my 18 year old son and I were busy catching newts. We caught male and female smooth newts and male palmate newts, we had 8 in total. Then the place was closing and we had to hand back the nets we had spent a good couple of hours there. Loved it and my little girl tells anyone that'll listen that 'We caught 8 newts!'
Initially, in my ignorance, I thought the male smooth newt was a crested newt! But when I thought about it some more I thought they're hardly likely to let the general public go fishing around in a pond with cresteds in! But nevertheless, the male smooth newts are beautiful, there was one in particular that had an amazing orange stripe under his tail, he was a real beauty.
