Brilliant tank setup. I've got one of those mangrove root things as well. It's amazing how much they grow, isn't it?

I'm very tempted to buy a live mangrove stalk - they have live shoots at my LFS - the only problem would be punching holes in my lid :S

Any ideas?

That would be pretty cool, no idea how you would do it though...

so that is a live mangrove? Do you know what its real name is or just where do I get one from? It's brilliant

That appears to be just a mangrove root.
You can buy baby live mangrove stalks, or dead cut roots - try eBay.
If not, ask your LFS.

im looking for a live root. Such as the one in the photo. I found one place that i could find some, but its like 18 hours away and is a retail store. Ebay only has dead roots and live mangrove stems.

The problem with mangroves is that they need intense lighting to be able to grow indoors. They are often grown in reef aquaria under metal halide lighting. The side effect is that the intense lighting throws a lot of heat. The also rapidly outgrow the aquaria unless you are constantly pruning them...

Oh ok. Thanks Ed. So I would probably (for less maintanence) be better off with just a dead mangrove root piece or driftwood for an eye catcher. Thanks.

change all of the captions to cutie moomin he/she is beautiful!

I know its not quite the same, but our local shop sells these ornaments that very very much like this mangrove root. Added benefit of no heavy lighting and no outgrowing.
They look pretty good, really.
