I've currently got my three happy in their 4ft home running a Ehiem external filter at 1000lph, but in the coming months their new home will be made, that being a "L" shaped home that'll be 160 x 40 x 70 (l,d,h) and 170 x 40 x 70.

now I know it's gonna hold a lot of water so the filter system will need to suffice so I have a cunning plan (baldrick lol) this being combining two external filters with a undergravel system, thought is simple really. externals pull the water out through the undergravel system thus taking all the waste out of the gravel making sure there is no **** in the tank.

only question is, would this work in theory or am I being daft?

Heh... Thats an interesting but i dont think it it would be very effective...

Undergravel filters reduce flow and only take out so much from the gravel... The dirt also eventually clogs up in the gravel if a person never hoovers. Having a undergravel filter as an intake for two external filters will make the two externals less effective...

You cant replace a good old gravel Vac ;)!!

Id stick with 2 external filters and dont be so lazy and do your gravel Vacs :D:D:rofl::rofl:

You cant have gravel in an axie tank! They will eat it and it will cause them huge amounts of grief, if not death. :(

However, MereB set up an reverse under sand filter that mat be of help to you. Its a great read on how to set an amazing huge tank. The L shape sounds awesome, pics when you're done please :)

very interesting about the reverse sand. I was not planning on using gravel, more like using larger stones. in theory the water would pass through the stones far easier.

Hmmm large stones could work or peices of slate.. less chance of clogging and good flow. Would be cool if it worked =D!!
