Hello everyone I was wondering I have two paddletail newts and a warty newt that I was thinking of putting in a mixed species tank together. I have a book called popular amphibians by philippe de vosjoli in which he states he has had them in a tank together for more than two years and it works with regular feeding. I was wondering what everyone thinks of this idea should I or shouldn't I?

Honestly I wouldnt do it. In addition to all the horror stories on here (see especially Species Mixing Disasters) Pachytriton labiatus are notoriously aggressive. It can work for awhile, but as the writer of the Paddletail Caresheet here on Caudata stated:
"These newts SHOULD NOT be kept with any other species. Some people have reportedly kept them in with other newt species without problems “until one day…..” I can personally report that they are able to rip the legs off an adult tiger salamander. Any fish kept with them is likely to be mutilated or eaten."
Male Paramesotriton are also often quite aggressive, so in theory the species could balance each other out. Or it could (more likely) end horribly with one or both getting maimed or worse. I personally don't take the risk with species mixing (except for shrimp), it doesn't seem worth losing an animal over.

I agree. It may work fine for a week, or a month, or even for 5 years, but sooner or later there will be bloodshed. I wouldn't even recommend keeping 2 paddletails together unless you have a large tank and understand how to set up lots of secure hiding places.

I dislike de vosjoli's books he often make comments like this with no further information what so ever like size, layout, and possible issues, he just says he does it like it can easily be done by anyone

I've also seen a book with him advocates mixing various darfrogs with "small tree frogs" and small tropical anoles seriously that's all the info he gives

not a great source of inspiration in my honest opinion

finally 2 years in my book isn't a success of mixing, keeping them till they die of old age is a success.

thanks guys that's what I was thinking too. Everywhere else I've seen said not to, but not these species specific before so wanted to ask. My two paddletails are in a 30gal setup right now. And all 3 of my warties are in 10 gal tanks except the newest one he is still in his quarentine tank for now. And my tiger sal is in a 25gal.

Before I knew what I was doing, I did this, and the paddletail ripped the warty newt to shreds in three days.
