If anyone's looking for an excuse to bundle up (as the forecast for Sunday is a high temperature of 10F):

Well, it is only a week away!. that's right, the kick off to the 1st annual Mudpuppy Monitoring program this Sunday! We are looking forward to seeing you all at the event. As I mentioned before, we will meet at the Leslie House located at 1831 Traver Road in Ann Arbor at 12:00 pm. Please make sure you dress for the weather. It looks like it will be pretty cold on Sunday. Based on the current site conditions, it does not look like we will have enough ice on the River to walk across, but we will be able to do some shoreline surveys. There may be enough ice on the backwater areas though. Weather permitting, we plan to be out until around 4:00pm.

Based on the response I have been getting, I am expecting at least 10-15 people. As I mentioned before we will provide some of the basic equipment and snacks, but I encourage you to bring things like waders (please clean and disinfect before we head out), warm cloths (and some extra just in case), and a thermos for hot beverages to keep warm. If you have your own nets and are willing to bring them to use at the survey, please let me know.

If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask. Please let us know if you are plan on attending. We at NAP area very excited you will be a part of this very important and fun inventory!

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
