i'm too cowardly to risk feeder fish, even with quarantine. even with the guarantee that they won't have parasites, i worry about them eating the gills of the axolotls. i have successfully kept ghost shrimp in my axolotl tank for quite awhile, and don't need to replenish the colony very often at all. that said, they may not be a very reliable food if your axolotl cannot catch them.there are plenty of different foods available, food for life i.e. worms, blood, dirt, black, small live fish i.e. guppies, mollies, platies (make sure the fish are quarantined for 30 days to avoid possible parasites/diseases), shrimp/cherry/ghost/river brine, there is also frozen food, i.e. krill, mysis, brine, earthworm, chopped cockles, chopped mussels, chopped shrimp, beef heart, then there are pellets of axolotl and also repashy, if your axolotl is very young then live food will be received better, if your axolotl is adult then frozen or pellets will be well received.
good to know. my personal axolotl seems to never use her hides, so i'm not sure she'd be suited for it. i hadn't even thought of the potential of spines or fins injuring the axolotl, but that's definitely a good point.I find that provided there are hides and caves provided then the chances of gill nipping is reduced as any fish that goes to close to the cave/hide will get snapped up, if the fish still manage to nip the gills then there is a high chance that the axolotl is unwell, what should be noted that although guppies, mollies and platies are suitable as live food other fish breeds aren't and can cause issues varying from fins/scales causing problems to actual attacking in the case of goldfish.
