Can Axies get that? My 2.5 incher, i have noticed lately that his back legs are just sort of hanging there. I have been feeding him chopped earthworm, bloodworm cubes, and pinhead crickets. Should i be supplementing his diet with something for calcium??? The temp is 69 degrees but the lighting is pretty subdued.

You seem to be feeding him the ideal food. Keep a close eye on the water temperature though as 69F is getting a little too warm.

Have his legs always done that?

Mel

Mine do that too, from time to time. But my are older, I contribute it to laziness, cause they don't do anything unless they are hungry.

Hi Yager,

Axies are a bit unique in that their skeletons have a high composition of cartilage rather than bone compared to many other animal species. Also because they are fully aquatic, their limbs are not really 'strong' in the sense that they are not adapted to moving on land (unless they morph, which by then would also develop stronger limbs). As such, axie's limbs by themselves are not as skeletally 'dense'. If a radiograph shot was taken of the axie's legs, you would see that the bones are not as compact and dense as other animals.

However that said, the axie should be able to move the limbs. As long as they can move, regardless of frequency, that would indicate normal bone, muscle and nervous function.

Metabolic bone disease in axies is still an area that needs more research and clinical studies. In general, nutrition plays a big part. The diet you are feeding, as Julia has reassured, is suitable and should meet the axie's nutritional demands. I would like to direct you to another thread that discusses the role of light exposure that is hypothesised to be involved in metabolic regulation. There is a school of thought, at least in vet fields that some very limited light exposure can actually promote better bone metabolism. Limited light exposure refers to very low UV light source (aquarium light/fluorescent) for up to 6 hours per day in a tank with plenty of shaded hiding places.

Cheers.

Thanx guys his legs appear normal today... I believe his legs looked like that because he had previously (the day before) eaten more than he ever had. I believe he was going through a growth spurt with the back legs so to speak because today his hind legs appear stronger and longer.

Had a question that I just want to be sure of. My marbled newt is a little over a year old and has started to develop and I noticed that he is starting to swell a little below his abdomen. I guess I’d like to know if they are his testes or if I need to be concerned.

Hello!!! I'm new to this website and idk how to ask a proper question on the designated spot yet, so I'll ask here, I'm a first time Axolotl owner, and my dad used to run an aquarium store, anyways... Orca, my Axolotl, seems to loose parts of her toes on one limb from time to time, I can't seem to find the problem. Tempature is well, she doesn't seem to have any infections or anything, though. And I'm not sure if I'll be able to find a vet in Brazil for amphibians that are in a reasonable distance to drive without stressing Orca out too much

Hello, I’m hoping for some advice please. Our Axolotl is about 7 months old. Till now no problem. Eating, growing and happy. He’s simply stopped eating. Everything looks fine, his gills look healthy and no apparent signs of sickness. He just swims past the pellets and bloodworm like he can’t smell it. I don’t think it’s a blockage either. Any ideas and suggestions for treatment would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
