Hey Folks:

I was wondering if anyone could shed any light on what variants of Alpine newts that are bred in the US?

Thanks in advance!

The only two I have heard tell of are alpestris and alpestris apuanus. Of course who knows what the Genus is these days.

M.a.apuanus, M.a.alpestris, M.a.cyreni, and M.a.inexpectatus are all kept/bred in the states. There could very well be other subspecies floating around here, but not everyone announces what they're keeping and when it breeds.

Understood on that account.

Could anyone direct me to persons working with any alpestris variants? Not looking to aquire, yet, just wanted to ask questions on their habits and specifics.

I have already done some research both here and elsewhere regarding the species. I have some specific questions on the different variants.

The US Caudate Registry is a good place to start, but like I said, not everyone wants to announce what they're keeping to the rest of the world...some people think it's immoral to have more than 2 aquariums. Good luck in your search for them, it seems like everyone and their grandmother is working with M.a.apuanus right now, so that would be a good subspecies to try to find first.

Thank you for the thought and effort into your reply.

Hello. I just noticed two notches, white small bubbles on the hind legs of one of my male newts.

Hey everyone, just want a little advice. Its 55 - 60 celcius in my Salamanders tank. Hes curled up and tyring ti bury himself, Im assuming hes too cold. I was wondering if he would benefit from a heated rock cave (since he LOVES his cave) that I could set on low? I NEVER see him curled up and trying to bury himself unless his tank sits at 63 degrees celcius or lower. So I am assuming hes a little uncomfortable.

He also seems a little sluggish, again, assuming hes cold. Having heating trouble with the new house right now. What do we think? Was thinking of grabbing this for him since its got very low, medium, and higher medium heat settings that exude heat downward inside the rock cave but ALSO exudes it UPWARDS outside of the rock cave, effectively keeping the tank itself a little warm. Seems like it miiiight be a little small for him though, my guy is about 7 inches from tip of his nose tothe tip of his tail. I also asked this as an actual question in a thread in case anyone wants to answer it there instead of here
