I just bought mealworms from the petshop to feed my axolotls, they're live, kept in the fridge in a small container of wood shavings. Are these good to feed axolotls?

I know this guy at work (Department of Agriculture and Food Western Australia) who knows another guy at work who breeds sheep maggots for research (maggots of blowflies that hang around sheeps butts); he reckons he can get some lab bred maggots to feed my axies, would they be alright for them to eat?

Mealworms are OK occasionally, but are high in fat and low in calcium and vitamins. Also, some people feel that the hard exoskeleton could contribute to digestive problems. I would say they should not be the majority of your axie's diet.

Housefly maggots are used for salamander food. Those lab-grown maggots are probably good food for axies, but I cannot say for sure.

Do you have a source for earthworms? These are probably better than either mealworms or maggots.
