Hi everyone,

I have a breeding pair of Triturus karelinii that bred every year since 2014. This year (2024), the male crested and was doing his dance, but I never saw amplexus and the female never responded to him. So no babies. I'm going to try harder to get them to breed this year but I'm curious if I'm running out of time. I'm having a hard time remembering how old they are but I think they are at least 11 years old. When do newts stop being able to reproduce? Anyone have any experience of really old newts breeding?

They don't get as old as a lot of Asian species, but with an age of 10-15 years they still can produce offspring. I'd say that it's probably due to another reason that they haven't reproduced this year. Hopefully next year will be more successful. You won't see any amplexus with Triturus, only their courtship.
