Massive change in behaviour, sick?

I bought three fire belly newts around 7 months ago now and everything was going perfectly with them, they were eating fine (and fighting over) the frozen foods I was giving them. I had a routine whereby the filter would get switched off and I would drop the food in the same place every other day and they would all go to that place and squabble over and at the food.

Mysteriously one of them died and then a few weeks later one developed a horrible furry growth on its face. I quarentined him and tried to look after him that way but he would not eat and the growth got bigger and bigger so my dad put him out of his misery for me which was rather upsetting.

So now I have just one newt left and he has changed a lot. Before they were totally aquatic and never used the turtle dock at all. Now he never comes off the turtle dock and also wedges himself up into the tank light lid. He has become a lot harder to feed and won't take the frozen food anymore. All i can get him to eat is live worms from the garden (I know this is bad but there doesn't seem to be live worm places near me) and even then I have to make sure he gets them before they fall into the water and die.

I have been doing the usual water changes and have a filter, a lot of my plants have died even though I have my light on a time for 8 hours a day - any suggestions would be much appreciated?

Can you test your water? Or have it tested at a fish shop? I think that would be the thing to do first.
