Hi Darren, both set-ups look suitable for juvenile marbled newts. The 2nd set-up appears to offer more in the way of hiding spots which they will use. You might want to add more hides to the 1st set-up. It depends how many animals you have in each enclosure. I find that moss from outdoors only lasts a few months. A good alternative is bark chippings, although not as attractive.

yeah i wanted to make 2 different setups one very natural and one that has one hiding spot(the plantpot).
I will have 7 marbled newts coming next week so hope the setup will be ok for them to start with.

Going forward should i have a water area for them or is this just needed for breeding time?

I have some bark chippings will monitor the moss see how long it lasts but have a good supply in the local woods.

thanks for advice

I would recommend a water dish, for 3 reasons that I can think of offhand. One, it's an insurance policy against the substrate getting dry - if, for example, you get called out of town unexpectedly and nobody mists the tank for a week. Life happens. Two, it's a convenient way to feed some varied foods, such as blackworms or cut-up earthworms. Three, it give the animals a way to "tell you" when they are interested in becoming aquatic - you see them spending a lot of time in the water dish.
