Males trying to mate?

Hi
I have today taken out the divider in the tank between Blanco and his new MALE mate (or so I thought) but Blanco is now laying spermatophores. Is it possible for males to lay spermatophores because of a new male in the tank? The new axie Diablo certainly looks like a young male to me, definately looks more male than Tinto (the female that I rehomed) looked, and the lady I bought Diablo off had also sexed him as a male (hence why I got him).

Gay animals turn up everywhere. Who knows. Your axie could be into the guys.

No really. Many animals show mating behaviors towards their same sex. In farming, they're duds. Happens a lot. Part of it could be sexual frustration of the animal, but I don't know if that's true for axies. Watch for eggs, but it's entirely likely that your Blanco digs the boys.

I wouldnt necessarily say they were gay, that would be assuming they have a preference for males over females, if a willing female was present they may well turn their attention to her, as it is now they can just be classed as unfussy. This form of behavior is quite common, my guys often get together after a water change and camp it up whilst the females watch from the sidelines and refuse to get involved.

I think it's more of a dominance thing, or at least a "a new axie! I better try to mate with it!" kind of thing, rather than homosexuality.

While there is little argument against homosexuality in nature (especially in birds), I don't think this is the case here.

Thanks all. Took two spermatophores out last night and another this morning. That is a small number compared to what he did with the female last time. Cannot believe how much he changed colour when excited. He went bright red and veiney, fascinating. No eggs yet so looks like we all good, for now at least! Diablo doesn't have the fat belly tinto had before she laid. So hopefully my boys have just taken a liking to each other. Better than fighting at least!
