Male newts: getting dressed up for the ladies

Seems like cooler weather or shorter days has inspired some of my males to put on their breeding dress.

First, a Triturus karelinii showing off his new mohawk and flashy tail stripe:

Next, a Cynops pyrrhogaster with some highlights just behind the mouth and on the tail:

And finally, much to my amazement, a male Neurergus strauchii with some white spots and highlights on his tail. I really had no idea that strauchii had any kind of breeding dress at all, so this is exciting!

Looks like a productive year yet again for you Jen. Congratulations!

Cool Jen, I had no idea of the neurergus breeding dress either. You have to keep us updated on that one. I keep my fingers crossed for Neurergus babies!

congratulations Jen!
also my young 3years old Triturus marmoratus is getting in a sort of "breeding dress"...I didn't expect it...I thought it was a female...but the tail stripe leaves no doubts...

just a question: do you think that he is ready to be "cycled" this winter?I don't know...he seems to be still "little" to me...

bye
Leo

Hi Leo, he does not look so "little" to me (though I am not an expert on marmoratus). What do you mean by "cycled" exactly? If you mean to give him a cooler period during the winter (in his regular tank), then this would be good for him whether he is big enough to breed or not. Good luck, I hope he has a female companion.

yes, I meant to give him a true "winter" period, gradually bringing the temperature from 15 down to 5°C...
good, I think I'll do it...as a friend of mine is going to give me a three old female marmoratus (about 13cm) which seems ready to breed...so...fingers crossed please;-)

Morg seems more of a marmoratus to me....

Maybe a new species? Homo sapiens marmoratus?
