Hi, i have fairly recently become the proud owner of 2 axolotls (salamence and mew(my real life pokemon)) , i have read that to stop them getting bored you should alter the surroundings inside of the tank a little, so whilst i went on holiday i collected some slate from the beach to put into their tank. i know that i have to get all of the salt water out of the slate to make it safe for fresh water but how would i do that??? other then soaking it in water and allowing enough time for the chlorine to evaporate, does anyone know either how long i should soak it to get rid of the salty water residue or any other way ill be able to make the slate suitable to put in their tank?? any advise will be incredibly helpful.

Slate is not porous, so will not need much soaking. A good scrub with clean water a couple of time should be fine, any tiny amount of salt left will be removed with water changes.

However, I would be more worried about bacteria and other nasties - I would pour boiling water over it several times to ensure it is biologically clean.

ok thankyou will do that in morning hopefully they shall enjoy the new additions to their tank lol:)

have done as you said this morning and they seem to be loving it, i also put some fresh oxygen weed in as they seem to have destroyed the last lot i put in lol. will post pictures later when i can find my camera lead
