Hello! I've recently noticed my lotl going to the surface of the water and taking a quick gulp of air, then swimming back to the bottom. She doesn't float around. Instead, she returns gently to the sand and continues on with whatever she was doing previously. I've only seen he get air twice in two days. One time for each day. I was wondering if this is normal? I've read that lotls sometimes do this in order to get more oxygen, but they also float when doing this. Besides getting air once a day (currently), she is acting completely normal and eating like a champ.

completely normal. Axolotls have rudimentary lungs that allow them to breath small amount of air, so swimming to the surface now and then is totally normal. Some axolotls will do it more than others. I have one that swims to the surface maybe once a day and another that loves to take a gulps of air and then float around the tank like a little blimp and ride the bubbles from her sponge filter. That's just her personality. She is way more active and hyper than all my others.

Thank you so much! I was afraid something more serious was going on.
