Loosing 2 - 3 - 5 babies a day?

Whats up with that?

Lil guys have a perfectly clean tank, fresh daphnia, freshly hatched brine shrimp??? They get fed 2 or 3 times a day (I suck out all old garbage before adding fresh food)

They are in a bare 5 gl tank with 1 inch of water so their food is NOT escaping them.

Got any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks
Sharon

I read somewhere 97% of them die anyways. Wether this would differ from the wild I'm not sure.

well axies don´t like their water to be too much clean , in my experience, I almost never clean the tank of my baby axies, and do not change their water weakly but from 2 in 2 weeks I do a water change, I don´t use any kind of filter, just a air stone, and the water that I change comes from the big axies tank, I never used fresh clean water on baby axies.
well this is been working for me and in 100 axies I usually loose 3 or 4 , I don´t know if this is the best way , but before I start this method I used to loose a lot of babies.

With correct water quality and feeding, you should have near 95% survival rate.

When I raised my offspring, they were kept in about 1 inch of water until they grew their front legs. Then I raised the water level to buffer against swings in water quality. Young are especially sensitive to water quality. I changed the water on the little 'uns about 50% daily with room temp water.

Maybe the brine shrimp are fouling the water. How often do you suck out the dead ones? Are you sure you're getting them all?

well pretty sure I'm getting them all - I sweep the bottom with a baster and empty the water in a large clear jar so I can see what was in it. Usually looks like average debris. When I don't see hardly any - I stop siphoning water off and replace it.

Yes my hubby informed me last night that I'm anal. Again. LOL. I was standing there watching the little guys - not move and he pinches me and says "thinking deep thoughts?" I said "well, I'm wondering are they eating (yes they are - pink bellies), how much are they eating, are they eating to much, is wondering is this NORMAL and am I anal for wondering if they are eating, not eating, how much and to much?"

'lotls are fed in the morning, lunch time and at bedtime - debris is sucked from the tank before fresh stuff is added.

Thanks!

I have two suggestions. (1) Take out a few random healthy larvae and put them in a new clean container (a plastic tub, or cut-off jug). Rather than cleaning out debris, transfer them to a clean container of clean water every day before feeding. If those live, while others continue to die, then you have your answer. (2) If the separated ultra-clean ones die anyway, then you need to think about treatment.

I realize that what I'm telling you is the opposite from Joao's advice. You really have to try different things until you find what works for you. I find his method (I call it the "pond" method) works well if you start out with a cycled tank, but if you are starting out with a clean tank when the eggs hatch, it can be a disaster.

One other thing... is this the first batch of eggs from the female involved?

I don't think so - I got these from a member here but I didn't think to ask.

I think I will seperate some out into several small container, lol heck I've got 100+ sterile baby food jars, lol each one could have their own house.

OH thats very true. oh boy I can't remember if I used water from 'lotl tank or not.... I might have just used the well water at room temp. hhhmmm....

Uh oh being anal is turning into a problem... shoot.

Thanks! That definitely gave me a direction to go in!

Not sure what to do now. I'm going to sort some out anyway though....

I have mine in small take-a-way tubs , about 7" x 4" with an inch of water. My daily routine consists of - in the afternoon when I finish work I line up 50 fresh tubs of water. I empty the tubs with the babies in, careful not to pour any out, then pop them into the new tub. after that I feed them (fresh hatched brine shrimp, daphnia etc). After I have finished changing all the babies from their old tub to the new ones I pour all the rubbish water away (at this point it has been put in to a bucket) and refill my second bucket with new water in order it to be conditioned and settled to room temp in order to use the next day.

I hatched approx 130 eggs and the few (4) that died so far are the ones I culled because of deformations.
:)

OH VERY NICE Sherry!

I stopped cleaning their water obsessively. I do suck out obvious garbage, and replace with room temp water. Have only had one death so far. I don't know what caused the other deaths still. I have 5 in baby food jars, sitting in the 5 gl tank to prevent rapid temp changes to such small amounts of water. And they are all doing fine too.

I've also slowed down the feeding. Morning and night only - cut out the lunch time thing.

Thats the update!
