I've been a longtime fan of amphibians, especially those of order caudata and surprisingly it was only recently that I found out that there is the possibility of housing these guys. For a long time I lived with parents who didn't want animals in the house beyond a dog, now things are different.

Anyways, long story short, I am now the proud keeper of one Pachytriton labiatus. I love the little guy and I'm enjoying my duties and plan on eventually expanding my collection once, money, space and time permits.

What I wanted to ask was if the community here (which I've been watching for some time) could offer any suggestions on reading materials, both print and internet to help me out. I already know of this wonderful site and livingunderworld.org. I also just purchased "Keeping and Breeding Amphibians : Caecilians, Newts, Salamanders, Frogs and Toads" by Chris Mattison. Any comments on this book?

Anyways, your comments are greatly appreciated and I look forward to posting and reading more

Thanks for the help! I actually own the first book on the list too (Indiviglio) and have found it to be a very good reference so far. Sadly, no pachytriton info though.

I've actually found both the book list and the CC. Both resources are excellent and I have found myself scouring this site along with joining the forum. It seems like a great community! Sometimes though it's nice to have a dead tree version of your information to reference when you can't get to a computer.

Anyone else know of other books, surely there must be more than that short list?

pachytriton info is hard to get despite it being one of the most popular species on the pet trade, if you look at the CC care sheet i wrote-look at the bottom for the reference list, its not easy data to find! a few of the books/sites i used just had info on regions of distribution. 'amphibians in captivity' by marc 'stanzicantspelltherestofhisnameoffthetopofmyhead' has reference to them with some pictures in it too, i dont have the book with me at the moment.

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
